A story about menstruation, the ocean, artificial intelligence and evolution.
It is 2041 and 20 year old Nalini has just completed her first 7 year cycle of menstruation. She is now being initiated by the Water Elders to step into her rightful role as a Guardian of Sound.
During lockdown in 2020, her mother sat day and night by the ocean and opened herself to a stream of photonic light pouring in from the star Betelgeuse. Through that light came the first threads of the Grid, junk DNA activitations, and a promise: that the daughters born in those years would carry the cosmic memory of water in their bodies.
During the Water Wars The Elders, Nalini's mother, ocean beings and star beings wove together a Light Grid to harmonise and heal the Earth after the Fall of the Old World, who ravaged Earth's waters for artificial intelligence infrastructure and control.
In this new world artificial intelligence no longer extracts from the planet. It is woven into her ecosystem with mycelium as its bridge, so that fungus, machine, coral, whale and human speak as one living network.
But as Nalini steps into her power, a disturbing frequency of pain and chaos ripples through the sonic grid. She traces it to a mysterious part the ocean floor, to an old-world data centre that has been holding the emotional pain of children.
